Bailey's first annual Family STEM Night was held on May 23rd in the Bailey Cafeteria. Students and their families were able to visit different tables and immerse themselves in hands-on challenges in science, technology, engineering, and math. One of the challenges was to make a cut-out person travel down a zip line the fastest using different materials to change size and mass. There was a room where students were able to code a Lego Robot through a maze using scratch coding, and the CT STEM Academy from Wallingford also came and shared Ozobots with our families. These are small robots that can be coded using colors. The night was filled with excitement of doing STEM and participants left with take-homes, raffle prizes, and memories. We hope for another great turnout next year.
Yesterday, Washington students celebrated with their families and shared some great writing!
Assistant Superintendent Judy Drenzek and Food Service Director Meg Kingston visited the learning garden at Mackrille School to plant some vegetables and flowers that the kids grew themselves, with help from these two ladies!

WHHS students in grades 9-12 work with our support team on navigating relationships, developing safe and healthy personal boundaries, and exploring post-secondary opportunities in both education and employment. Our support staff also provides our students and families with community resources essential for young adults ready to embark on their next chapter. Congratulations to Samantha Ortiz-Hernandez from Bailey Middle School on being named a top select for ASAP!’s 19th Annual Celebration of Young Writers! Samantha was chosen for the top 12 out of over 187 submissions from over 70 schools in Connecticut. You can see Samantha and the top selects publicly read at a free Celebration of Young Writers event at Spring Hill Vineyards on Friday, June 21st. Students in Ms. Katz’s 3rd-grade classroom at Forest are selecting 10 books each to take home for the summer. These books are located in the school’s “The Owl’s Nest” book room which offers free books to students!
At Seth G. Haley, students are met as they walk into the building with a warm welcome to start their day by the staff! Yesterday, Carrigan students were lucky enough to get a visit from Danny, the West Haven Fire Department therapy dog! Danny came to the school in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month. Thank you to Danny and the WHFD for putting smiles on our student’s faces!
Mackrille School embeds social-emotional learning into their daily routines. Both the social worker and school psychologist circulate into each classroom to provide specific lessons on character development, emotion identification, empathy, and self-advocacy. Students learn about the BIG 3 Mackrille expectations, including being respectful, responsible, and safe.
