AthletesSeniors Connor Moriarty and Victoria Garcia have played key roles on their teams at West Haven High School. Connor, a forward for the Boys Ice Hockey team, and Victoria, a captain on the Wrestling team, have each helped their teammates and contributed to their team’s efforts. Their commitment over the years has shaped their experiences and helped define each season.

For Connor, a standout memory came when he scored his first high school goal against East Haven. “Scoring my first goal was an unforgettable moment. It showed me that all the effort I put into practice really pays off,” he said. Victoria’s favorite memory was being named captain, an honor she hadn’t expected. “It meant more to me than I can explain. Queen of the Mat is up there too, just being with the girls, laughing, competing, and doing what we love together,” she shared. Moments like these remind both athletes of why they love their sports and motivate them to continue improving.

Serving as captains, both athletes have grown in leadership and responsibility. Connor described his approach, “Leadership is about setting an example, not just giving orders. I realized that how I work and stay positive will have an impact on my teammates.” Victoria reflected, “Leading isn’t just about being the loudest or the best. It's about communicating, understanding people, and actually listening. Being a captain means showing up every day, especially when it’s hard. It’s about being there for your team like family, not just a leader.”

Off the ice and mat, both captains take pride in their accomplishments and contributions. Connor shared, “One thing I’m proud of off the ice is my grades because it reflects how hard I work.” Victoria said, “I’m proud of the fact that I have a job and take it seriously. Balancing work with wrestling and school every day has taught me responsibility and time management. Working has helped me grow, become more independent, and handle everything I commit to.”

Looking ahead, both are planning for the next steps after high school. Connor plans to study business in college and is still figuring out where to go. “I’m excited to explore the opportunities ahead and continue working toward my goals,” he said. Victoria plans to spend time in Portugal with her family, focusing on being with them while her college plans remain undecided.

Both athletes credit important influences in their lives. Connor added, “My dad has helped me become the person I am today. He’s taught me many life lessons and has been there for me every day of my life.” Victoria said, “A big part of who I am today is because of my old captain, Julian. He was always there when things got tough and taught me so much about wrestling and life. My coaches have played a huge role too. Coach Martinez got me into wrestling and has always had my back, Coach Pat pushed my abilities in training, and Coach Cook constantly challenges me to be better than I think I am. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without all of them.”

Connor Moriarty and Victoria Garcia have supported their teams and the people around them throughout their time at West Haven. Their presence in West Haven athletics has left a meaningful impact that will stay with both the program and the teammates who shared those seasons with them. Their dedication will continue to be remembered as an example of commitment and character within the school community.
