Ben Proano and Mark Aiken are senior captains for boys swimming and wrestling, two programs that require steady effort and commitment throughout the season. In their roles, both athletes have carried out the expectations that come with serving as captains for their teams. Their experiences reflect the different ways leadership can show up across sports at West Haven.
Ben shared one of the moments that stood out to him this year, saying, “One of my favorite memories from this season was how close our team became. Everyone worked hard for each other, and that showed at meets. Watching teammates improve and celebrate together made the season really memorable. That team energy is something I’ll always remember.” His memory highlights how much the group’s support for one another shaped the season. Mark described a favorite moment of his own: “My favorite memory from last season was eating pizza on the bus with my teammates after a win.” For him, the simple time spent together after a successful meet was something that stayed with him.
Leadership has taught each captain something different. Ben explained, “Being a captain taught me that leadership isn’t about being loud, it’s about setting an example. Showing up every day and putting in the work helped push the team forward. I also learned how important it is to support teammates, especially when things don’t go perfectly. Those moments matter.” His experience shows how much consistency and encouragement can influence a team. Mark added his perspective, saying, “Something I’ve learned is that being a captain is just a title. Being a leader is what truly matters.” His comment reflects the difference between holding a position and earning trust through actions.
Both athletes also talked about something they take pride in outside of competition. Ben said, “I’m proud of being able to balance school and swimming. It hasn’t always been easy, but it taught me how to manage my time and stay disciplined. Those skills are something I know I’ll use in the future.” His focus on balance shows how much effort goes into managing both academics and athletics. Mark shared, “I’m proud of my hard work on the mats. When I wrestle, I always try to leave everything out there. Even when facing adversity, I keep the mentality of not stopping when I’m tired, but stopping when I’m done.” His approach reflects the mindset he brings into every match.
Looking ahead, both captains outlined their plans after graduation. Ben said, “After high school, I plan to attend college and focus on my education. I want to keep challenging myself and stay involved in things I care about. Swimming has helped prepare me for that next step.” Mark explained, “My plans after high school are to attend college for business while continuing to focus on my MMA career.” Each athlete has a clear direction for what comes next.
When asked who has influenced them most, both athletes pointed to people who have supported them along the way. Ben shared, “My coaches have pushed me to be better and to not give up on myself. Outside of swimming, my 10-year-old sister has been a huge inspiration. Her positivity and encouragement remind me to keep going, even when things get tough. Having that support has made a big difference for me.” Mark said, “My cousins are a big part of who I am today. They introduced me to the values of hard work and dedication at a young age. Because of them, I learned what it means to stay focused and never quit.” Their answers show how much guidance from family and coaches has shaped their approach.
Ben Proano and Mark Aiken have each made a steady impact on their teams by showing up for their teammates and taking their roles seriously. Their time as captains has shaped their experiences in meaningful ways, and the perspective they have gained will stay with them as they take their next steps beyond high school.
