Pedro Furtado has made important contributions to the West Haven Varsity Soccer team this year. As a midfielder wearing #10, his leadership and effort have had a strong impact on his teammates and the West Haven Athletics community.
When asked about his favorite memory from the season, Pedro said, "My favorite memory from this season was scoring a tough free kick in the first round of states. We were tied 0-0 at halftime, and the free kick came from a spot that normally you wouldn’t shoot. It was a tight angle, almost completely flat with the goal line. Not only did it go in, it went in the top corner."
Reflecting on his role as a captain, Pedro shared, "One thing I learned about being a captain is that your team depends on you. If they see you with your head low and not trying to fight to get back in the game, they’re going to do the same thing. Even if it doesn’t seem possible, you still give everyone hope and always keep trying."
Pedro is also proud of his academic achievements. "I maintain good grades. Usually they are lower in the first quarter because of the season, but after that, they go up to normal A’s and B’s. I have held a 3.8 GPA from freshman through junior year."
Looking ahead, Pedro plans to attend college and pursue a major in the healthcare industry for four years. After earning his bachelor’s degree, he plans to continue his education while working. His college of choice is the University of Connecticut.
Pedro credits his family for helping him become the person he is today. "Someone who helped me become the person I am is definitely my family, starting with my dad. This year he was at every game and practice. His favorite part of the day was just watching me play. My mom raised me to not judge people but to perceive them from a different angle and understand where they are coming from."
Pedro Furtado’s leadership, effort, and dedication both on and off the field have made a meaningful impact on his teammates and the West Haven Athletics community.
