Adam Pelz took the reins of the West Haven High School girls soccer program in June 2023, bringing with him five years of coaching experience. In that time, he has established himself as a coach who values effort, discipline, and the kind of consistency that shapes not only strong athletes but also strong individuals.
For Adam, the lesson he wants his players to carry with them has little to do with results on the scoreboard and everything to do with what happens in the unseen moments. "I hope every athlete leaves our program understanding that the real difference is made in the unseen moments — the extra effort, the discipline, and the consistency behind the scenes. Hard work doesn’t always pay off right away, but over time it always does."
Adam’s coaching style is deeply influenced by his own mentor, Leszek Wrona, who guided him throughout his childhood at a soccer academy in Bristol, CT. "Leszek consistently coached my team through the idea that we were only as strong as our weakest link; and in order to be a successful team, we had to bring out the best in one another. His guidance taught me the importance of confidence, self-belief, leadership, and hard work."
Among the many moments that stand out in his young career, one in particular remains especially meaningful. During a match at Jonathan Law, a senior who had missed the previous season with an ACL injury made her return to the field. "She scored a free kick from about 30 yards away, and it was by far one of the most deserved goals I have ever seen," Adam recalled. For him, it wasn’t just about the highlight—it was the resilience and determination that made the moment unforgettable.
When asked about his favorite part of the season, Adam points to the very beginning. "I enjoy tryouts the most because the entire team shows up with a different sense of excitement and enthusiasm to be back on the field for the next two months. That type of energy is contagious and makes me incredibly excited for the season ahead of us."
His philosophy reflects that same emphasis on effort and persistence. "Hard work beats talent when talent does not work hard. I have always been of the belief that gritty players can beat the best team on their day. Being a player filled with hustle, energy, and grit is the most important asset a player can have, and those are the qualities I want to coach."
Through his leadership, Adam Pelz is shaping a program that goes beyond the game itself, where athletes learn that the habits of dedication, resilience, and teamwork can carry them far beyond the soccer field.
