Seniors Hailey Johnson and Victoria Buenaño have both made lasting impressions within West Haven Athletics through leadership, dedication, and passion for their respective teams. Hailey, leading the dance team, has inspired her peers with her energy, discipline, and positivity. Victoria, as captain of the girls’ swim team, has set a standard of commitment and encouragement in and out of the pool.
For Hailey, her most memorable experience came during her sophomore year, when she performed her first solo routine at a competition. “I was so nervous I would mess up, but my team cheered me on the entire time. Everyone hugged me when I got off stage, and in that moment, I fell even more in love with dance,” she recalled. Victoria’s favorite moment came when she watched her younger sister compete in her very first race. “We worked really hard during the summer to get her ready to swim in a meet,” she shared. “I felt really proud of her—she came a long way, and I was happy to teach her all the swims to get her to that point. This is our first and last year together swimming, so I try to make every moment with her a good memory.” Both athletes highlight how support and connection shape the experiences that define them.
Stepping into leadership roles has been a defining part of their high school journeys. Hailey approaches her captaincy with a sense of responsibility. “I try to lead by example,” she said. “I always come to practice with a positive mindset and am willing to try challenging skills. I trust that the team will reflect the attitude I give to them.” Victoria shared that being captain has taught her the importance of maintaining sportsmanship and unity. “I’ve learned a lot from the girls on my team—not just about competition, but about respect and communication. If there’s ever an issue, I’m glad they feel comfortable coming to me. Being captain isn’t just a title—it’s an honor, and I take it seriously while trying to keep things fun and positive.”
Beyond athletics, both students have excelled academically and personally. Hailey takes pride in her character and the encouragement she offers others. “I’m proud of the person I am,” she shared. “I’m very selfless and love seeing others succeed. It motivates me to keep working just as hard.” Victoria takes pride in earning high honors throughout all four years of high school while balancing a demanding schedule of honors courses, swimming, and art club. “I’m grateful for the opportunities my teachers have given me and proud of the consistency I’ve maintained,” she said.
Looking ahead, both have clear goals for their futures. Hailey plans to attend Sacred Heart University, where she hopes to major in health science and eventually become a Physician Assistant. “I also hope to continue dance and theatre in college,” she added. Victoria plans to attend Southern Connecticut State University to pursue a degree in psychology, with aspirations of becoming a therapist. She’s also considering cosmetology as a side profession. “I chose SCSU because of the connections I already have there,” she explained. “I’ve taken Southern classes and know people who spoke highly of its programs.”
When reflecting on who has shaped them most, Hailey points to her mother as her biggest supporter. “My mom has always given me the best advice and reminds me to live in the moment. She’s taught me to enjoy life instead of worrying about things I can’t control. I hope I can give others that same support.” Victoria credits her younger sister as a guiding influence. “She’s been with me through everything—whether it was watching movies or playing outside, she’s taught me patience and empathy. I’m proud to be her sister and even prouder to swim with her this year.”
West Haven is fortunate to have leaders like Hailey and Victoria. The way they approach their teams, support their teammates, and balance commitment with care reflects the thoughtfulness they bring to everything they do. Their leadership isn’t just about guiding practices or competitions—it’s about creating an environment where those around them can grow, learn, and succeed alongside them. In learning what motivates them, it’s easy to see that both are prepared for much more than their next meet or performance. They’ve already developed the kind of perspective that will carry them far beyond high school, wherever their paths take them next.
