Behind the Whistle

Bridgette HoskieBridgette Hoskie has been leading the Cheer program at West Haven High School since 2018, bringing 15 years of coaching experience and a passion for developing athletes both on and off the mat. Her focus goes beyond routines and scores—she aims to shape strong, confident, and resilient young women who carry the lessons they learn through cheer into every aspect of their lives.

One lesson stands out as the cornerstone of her coaching. “Life may knock you down, but believe in yourself. Also, don’t ever let your voice be silenced. Be seen and be heard.” For Coach Hoskie, it’s not just about cheering—it’s about helping her athletes find confidence, perseverance, and a sense of self-worth.

Her coaching philosophy has been shaped by important mentors in her life, especially her daughter’s father. “He showed me the importance of integrity. The kids are always watching. If you cheat to win, then you’re really the biggest loser. Never let a game compromise who you are.” This lesson guides every decision she makes as a coach and every expectation she sets for her team.

Some of Coach Hoskie’s most memorable moments have come from milestone achievements and seeing her athletes shine. “Winning West Haven’s first Pop Warner National Title was unforgettable. It was my final year with the WH Seahawks, and I shared that win with my long-time coach Kristen Teshoney, my daughter Tianna, and her daughter Jenna, who was a participant on the team. Another highlight was my WHHS team winning top score of the day at a cheer competition. That team was filled with the girls who inspired me to become a coach—they had been on my team since kindergarten.”

She particularly enjoys the energy and excitement of competition season. “I love competition season, whether it’s cheer, football, or basketball playoffs. The energy, excitement, and camaraderie make it so much fun.”

At the heart of her coaching philosophy is character development. “I strive to build character! I want my cheerleaders to be good students, people, and role models. I hold them accountable on and off the mat. If you are going to wear the uniform, then you will be someone others can look up to. Integrity, accountability, and respect are key.” Through her guidance and mentorship, Coach Hoskie ensures that every cheerleader leaves her program not only a stronger athlete but a more confident, responsible, and respected member of the West Haven community.
