Seniors Travis Dyer and Jen Ngo have made significant contributions to West Haven Athletics, guiding their teams with determination and consistency. Travis, serving as co-captain for the Cross Country team, has inspired his teammates through perseverance and example, while Jen, a captain for the girls’ volleyball team, has led with dedication, skill, and steady leadership on the court.
One memory that stands out for Travis happened during a 5K race when he lost his footing just past the two-mile mark. “I fell, but I made it my mission to recover as quickly as possible,” he shared. “A runner nearby complimented my recovery and paced with me the rest of the way. That moment stuck with me because it showed the importance of perseverance and support from others.” For Jen, a defining moment came when she started in her first official varsity match. “Getting to play with my favorite girls and helping our team to win was inspirational,” she said. These experiences highlight how both athletes have embraced challenges and grown from them.
Taking on captain roles has given both Travis and Jen opportunities to strengthen their leadership skills. Travis explained, “As a captain, you are what new recruits and current members look up to. They notice your dedication, respect, and how you communicate with coaches.” Jen offered her perspective on leadership, noting, “I learned that there will always be someone who will disagree with you—coaches, teammates, friends, and family—and it’s okay not to please everyone.” Both have applied these lessons daily, guiding teammates through practices, matches, and team dynamics.
Outside of athletics, both students have achieved and contributed in meaningful ways. Travis said, “I’m proud of the friends and connections I’ve made while staying committed to school and activities.” In addition to athletics, he has remained involved in Blue Devil Band, Student Government, Interact, Student Council, and other programs. Jen emphasized the impact of her personal connections: “I am most proud of my friends and little sister. They have all accomplished so much through high school and continue to inspire me every day.” Both show that success in athletics can be balanced with academics and personal growth.
Looking forward, Travis plans to pursue a college major in Acting or Musical Theatre, considering schools such as Western Connecticut State University, American Musical and Dramatic Academy, and the University of Connecticut. Jen plans to attend college—ideally in Boston—where she will pursue a degree in biochemistry or a premed track, with the goal of becoming an optometrist and eventually opening her own practice while offering free weekend clinics.
Travis reflected on a key influence in his life: “My father has supported my ideals and kept me on the right path. I owe a lot to him.” Jen acknowledged her coach’s role in her development: “My coach, Gene Sullivan, has helped me grow as a player and a leader. Although he can be intense, I know he has my best interests at heart and will always support me.”
Travis Dyer and Jen Ngo have demonstrated that hard work, resilience, and leadership define true athletes. By pushing themselves and supporting their teams, they have left a mark on West Haven Athletics that reflects their character, determination, and passion for the game.
