Seniors Brianna Madera and Connor “CJ” Oksenberg have each made a lasting impact on West Haven Athletics, leading their teams with dedication, skill, and heart. Brianna, a flyer and captain for the Varsity Cheerleading team, has inspired her teammates with energy, precision, and teamwork, while Connor, a safety and captain for the Varsity Football team, has set the standard for effort, accountability, and leadership on the field.
For Brianna, some of her favorite memories include both team and individual achievements. “Team-wise it was really special winning Grand Champion during my freshman year. Individually it was earning First Team All-State honors in my junior year,” she shared. CJ’s standout memory from this season came during Yale Camp: “My favorite memory was from this year when we attended Yale Camp and our team shut out Choate in a scrimmage period.” It’s times like these that he can remember and use to fuel himself, realizing that hard work and leadership can help overcome big opponents or challenges.
Serving as captains, both athletes have grown in leadership and responsibility. Brianna reflected, “Being a captain, I have learned how to be a better leader and communicator. It’s a balancing act and with that I have really learned how to delegate responsibilities and work together with my co-captain.” CJ described his approach: “As a captain, I have learned to lead by example. Someone is always watching, so I always try to do the right thing.” He applies this approach consistently during games, practices, and team meetings.
Off the field, both captains take pride in their accomplishments and contributions. Brianna said, “Away from cheerleading, I pride myself in trying to help other people whenever I am able to do so. I also am proud of the work I put in and out of the classroom in order to be a good student.” She is a member of the National Honor Society and Peer Advocates, demonstrating her commitment to academics and serving others. CJ shared more about his life outside of football: “Outside of football, I am extremely proud of my involvement in helping animals. Whenever I get the time in my free time, I always try to volunteer at local shelters.” Through this, he shows that he leads by example off the field as well, contributing to his local community.
Looking ahead, both are planning for college. Brianna is still weighing her options but shared, “I plan to study in the sports field,” while CJ is exploring his opportunities and hopes to continue playing football at the college level while earning a degree.
Both athletes credit important influences in their lives. Brianna said, “I am grateful for my mom and dad; they have both helped me become the person I am today, pushing me to work hard and encouraging me to be the best I can.” CJ added, “My trainer, Shaan, has helped me mature and develop into the player I am today.”
Together, Brianna Madera and Connor Oksenberg have shown what it means to lead with dedication, character, and heart. Their efforts on the field, in the classroom, and in the community set a standard for their teammates and leave a lasting mark on West Haven Athletics.
