Beyond the Crest: Robert Forleo, Class of 2020
Robert Forleo, a proud member of West Haven High School’s Class of 2020, has always had a strong connection to his community—whether representing WHHS on the ice as a hockey captain or now giving back through his work with the school district. From student-athlete to working in communications for the district, Robbie’s journey has been shaped by meaningful mentorship, a commitment to growth, and a deep pride in where he comes from. He attended the University of New Haven, studying at the Pompea College of Business, which helped prepare him for the work he does today.
Reflecting on his time at WHHS, Robbie is quick to acknowledge the educators and mentors who shaped him. “Several individuals at WHHS had a lasting impact on me,” he shared. “Mrs. Amato consistently went above and beyond—even after my freshman year—to help me understand challenging math concepts. Mr. Schevling made a strong impression as well; his ability to blend humor with effective teaching made the classroom an engaging place to learn. Mrs. Palmer was always a reliable source of support whenever I needed guidance. In hockey, I was fortunate to have several great coaches who taught me the importance of hard work and teamwork. But the biggest influence of all was Coach Perno. He constantly challenged us not to settle and showed us that there’s always a higher level to reach—if we were willing to work for it. He helped instill a mindset of growth and accountability in those who truly wanted to improve.”
When offering advice to current students, Robbie shares a message rooted in confidence and persistence. “It might sound cliché, but if you want something—go after it. Manifest it. Believe in yourself and know that you’re capable and deserving of success,” he said. “There will be bumps in the road—it’s part of the journey. But if you stay consistent and put in the work, you’ll reach your goals. Don’t be intimidated by the uphill climb or the unknown ahead. Be the first to take that step, and you’ll already be ahead of so many others. You’ll be amazed at where it takes you.”
If he could go back and speak to his younger self, Robbie knows exactly what he’d say: “I would tell myself to take more risks. High school is the perfect time to take calculated chances—whether that’s in sports, academics, or leadership. Bet on yourself. That’s how growth happens, and it’s where confidence is built.”
Today, Robbie works as the Director of Communications for the West Haven Board of Education. “In this role, I manage the district’s social media, write for the local newspaper, maintain web content, design supporting graphics, and send families important alerts and district-wide updates,” he explained. “It’s a position that combines creativity, communication, and community—three things I’ve always valued. Working in my hometown makes it especially meaningful.”
Throughout his journey, Robbie has developed a mindset that helps him face challenges head-on: “Learn the lesson. Leave the event.” For him, it’s about perspective. “Failure is inevitable—it’s part of life. What’s most important is how you respond. Every setback comes with a lesson, and if you can take that with you while leaving the rest behind, you’ll continue to grow into the best version of yourself.”
Robbie Forleo’s story is a reminder that growth comes from staying grounded, taking initiative, and believing in yourself. Whether he’s communicating district-wide initiatives or supporting the next generation of Westies, he does it all with purpose—and pride.
