Ricke Arroyo brings 25 years of coaching experience to the field, including four years leading the soccer program at WHHS. With a long-standing passion for the sport, Coach Arroyo has dedicated himself to developing not only skilled athletes but also well-rounded individuals who carry the lessons learned on the field into all aspects of their lives. His approach combines technical expertise with personal mentorship, ensuring players grow as athletes and as people.
When asked about the lessons he hopes his players take away, Ricke emphasizes character above all: “I hope all the players I coach in the program become good human beings through soccer. I believe soccer can teach you many life lessons you might not find outside of this sport.” For him, success is measured not only in goals or victories but in the values and resilience his players develop through the game.
Reflecting on mentors who shaped his coaching style, Ricke shares, “Carlos Bianchi, a three-time Copa Libertadores winner with Boca Juniors, is a coach who shaped my life. I learned from him the right personality a soccer coach needs to have, how to get to players’ emotions by speaking honestly with them, and lastly, how he manages a group of players to understand how he wants them to play.” That philosophy of honesty, emotional connection, and clear communication informs his own coaching approach today.
Some of Ricke’s most memorable moments come from championship pursuits. “Throughout my coaching career, moments that I will never forget were making it to the finals with a U-6 team and with a second division team that I coached in Peru. Whenever I have the opportunity to bring my team to the final stage, it always brings me goosebumps.” Those experiences reinforce his belief in hard work, teamwork, and the rewards of perseverance.
He particularly enjoys the first day of each season, which marks the start of new opportunities and challenges: “The first day of the season is always the time I enjoy the most because I get to be back on the field and start coaching my players for the new season ahead!” That excitement sets the tone for a season of growth, learning, and achievement.
Coach Arroyo’s philosophy is straightforward but powerful: “I am convinced that player discipline and player skills help their talent grow in their game. That’s why my coaching philosophy would always be: discipline and skills beat talent!” By prioritizing dedication and skill development, he ensures his players are prepared to reach their full potential.
Through decades of experience, Ricke Arroyo has built a soccer program where athletes are challenged to grow both as players and as individuals. His mentorship, emphasis on discipline, and commitment to teaching life lessons through sport create a foundation for success that extends well beyond the field. Under his guidance, players not only sharpen their skills but also develop the character and resilience that will serve them in every area of life.
