Pride, gratitude, and celebration filled the auditorium at West Haven High School during the annual Pamela B. Gardner Senior Scholarship Night, where students, families, educators, and community members gathered to honor the accomplishments and bright futures of the Class of 2025.
Named in memory of Pamela B. Gardner, beloved former principal of West Haven High School, the event recognized graduating seniors who have demonstrated academic achievement, strong character, leadership, service, and involvement in the school and community. Over 160 scholarships and awards were presented to students pursuing higher education and career pathways.
“Tonight is about celebrating the full journey of our students—not just their academics, but who they’ve become and what they’ve given back,” said Principal Rob Bohan. “We’re proud of each and every one of them.”
Two students, in particular, shared reflections that captured the spirit of the evening. Joel Gordon, recipient of the George Ludington Memorial Scholarship—awarded to a well-rounded student engaged in community service and planning to further their education—spoke about how West Haven High School helped shape him. When asked how the school helped him become well-rounded, he said, “Getting a summer job through [the Summer Youth Employment Program] here at the high school has shown me how to work hard, communicate better, and make friends more easily.” Joel also highlighted his role as a Peer Advocate and his involvement in events like Toys for Joy, which inspired him to give back to others. After graduation, Joel plans to join the United States Military to serve and protect his country.
Tyler Bernardi received the Frederick Giovannini Award, which is given to a student who shows good character and is involved in extracurricular activities. When asked how those activities shaped his high school experience, Tyler shared, “Being involved in band, hockey, and lacrosse helped me meet a lot of different people. One of my favorite memories was playing in the students versus teachers hockey game—it was so much fun.” Tyler credited several teachers and coaches for their encouragement and support, which helped him stay focused and gain confidence—especially during a position change in hockey his junior year. Tyler will continue his education this fall in the nursing program at Southern Connecticut State University.
Throughout the evening, it was clear the Class of 2025 represents more than just academic success—they are volunteers, athletes, artists, advocates, and future leaders. Whether planning to attend college, join the workforce, or serve their country, each student honored brought pride to their families, their school, and the West Haven community.
Congratulations to all the scholarship recipients on this well-deserved recognition. Your hard work, integrity, and determination will carry you far—and your community will always be cheering you on.
