On May 6, 2025, West Haven High School hosted its annual Athlete Signing Day in the WHHS Lecture Hall, celebrating the accomplishments of student-athletes who will continue competing at the collegiate level. This year’s event marked a major milestone for the school, with 22 students committing to college athletics — the highest number in school history for a single graduating class.
Mike Anquillare, co-athletic director at WHHS, shared remarks highlighting the significance of the day and the hard work it represents.
“One word comes to mind today: pride,” Anquillare said. “Reaching this level takes a tremendous amount of dedication — managing academics, practices, training sessions, and responsibilities at home. It’s no small feat.”
He also took time to recognize the parents and guardians who played a vital role in supporting these student-athletes.
“While this day is about honoring the students’ achievements, it’s also important to acknowledge the families behind them,” he said. “As a parent of a college athlete myself, I understand how much time, energy, and sacrifice goes into helping students reach this point — whether that’s coordinating schedules, managing finances, or supporting other children at home. These students didn’t get here alone.”
The event also offered a chance for student-athletes to reflect on their journey. Connor Hume, a senior on the WHHS varsity baseball team who committed to play at Nichols College, shared how his time at West Haven has shaped him.
“WHHS has prepared me both academically and athletically by teaching me discipline and resilience,” Hume said. “The courses challenged me to stay organized and focused every day in order to reach my goals. Athletically, competing on the field taught me the importance of striving for success — not just winning, but doing it with respect, integrity, and class. These values have shaped who I am, and I know they’ll continue to guide me as I compete at the next level.”
Anquillare emphasized that success like this is the result of teamwork — not just on the field, but at home and throughout the school community.
“It truly takes a team effort — between students, families, coaches, and school staff — to make moments like this possible,” he added. “We’re also incredibly grateful to our administrators and coaches for their dedication to helping students grow both athletically and academically.”
As the 22 student-athletes announced their college commitments, the atmosphere in the room was filled with celebration — a proud reflection of the effort, support, and perseverance that brought them to this milestone.
