If you've ever watched the morning announcements or visited whhsnews.com, you've already seen the work of the WHHS Rostrum Club — the voice and eyes of West Haven High School. Led by co-advisors Jennifer Cummings and Stephanie Eburg, this media-savvy club is more than just the news team. It's a hub for storytelling, creativity, and real-world media experience.

The Rostrum has a long-standing history at WHHS, with print editions of the school newspaper dating back to the 1940s. These days, the club has transformed into a digital newsroom, complete with a daily video broadcast during homeroom and a dynamic website featuring stories, interviews, event coverage, and more.

From reporting on special events and sports to filming "man-on-the-street" videos that highlight the fun spirit of WHHS, the Rostrum Club is always in motion. Members can dive into all aspects of production — from anchoring and editing news segments to writing opinion pieces or submitting creative artwork to the site’s Creative Corner.

“The best part is that everyone finds a place to shine,” said Ms. Cummings. “Whether you’re behind the camera, in front of it, or behind the scenes writing and editing — there’s something for everyone.”

And they’re not just making content — they’re managing it, too. The Rostrum team runs the school’s digital event calendar, seen online and broadcast on hallway TVs. They also take field trips, like a recent visit to ESPN headquarters, and invite guest speakers from the world of journalism and media.

Students can expect to learn valuable technical skills like DSLR photography, video editing with Adobe Creative Cloud, and digital news production — but the benefits don’t stop there. “You’ll learn how to tell a story, how to collaborate, and most importantly, you’ll find a team that feels like family,” said Ms. Eburg.

The club meets every Monday after school in room F116, and all students are welcome. Another way to get involved? Sign up for one of the school’s Digital Media and Journalism classes to join the action from the classroom to the control room. Follow this link to learn more.

Looking for a place to make your voice heard, learn new skills, and have fun while doing it? The WHHS Rostrum Club is always on the record — and always looking for fresh talent.
