At West Haven High School, Mike Luzietti has been a standout on the boys' lacrosse team, serving as a captain and playing both attack and midfield. One of his most cherished memories came during his junior year, when he and his teammates made school history by becoming the first team to win a game in the state tournament. “That moment was unforgettable,” Mike shared.
As a leader on the field, Mike embraced the challenges of being a captain. “It taught me that not everything will go as planned, but you have to keep showing up, putting in the work, and striving toward your goals no matter what,” he said. Off the field, Mike has been equally impressive, earning high honors throughout high school and graduating ranked #9 in his class.
Mike will be continuing his academic journey at the University of New Haven, where he plans to major in Criminal Justice with the goal of becoming a detective. He also plans to stay involved in the sport by playing club lacrosse in college. Reflecting on his support system, Mike expressed his gratitude: “I want to thank my parents for always pushing me to be the best version of myself both on and off the field. I’d also like to thank Coach Moran for preparing me well in the offseason and helping set the tone for the year.”
On the girls' side of the program, Chloe Whelan, a dynamic midfielder and two-year captain, has led with heart and purpose. A highlight of her high school career came during her sophomore year when the team dedicated a game to cancer awareness. “Wearing a ribbon on our uniforms and playing for a cause bigger than ourselves made that day so special,” she recalled.
Chloe’s leadership over the past two seasons helped shape both her team and her personal growth. “Serving as captain taught me responsibility, leadership, and how to make decisions not just for myself, but for the good of the whole team,” she said. Through the sport, she also discovered important life lessons: “Playing sports has given me discipline, confidence, and a deeper understanding of who I am and what I’m capable of.”
Next fall, Chloe will attend Sacred Heart University to major in Criminal Justice, with hopes of continuing her lacrosse career at the collegiate level. She credits much of her success to the support of those closest to her: “One of my biggest supporters has been my best friend, Katelynn Salgado. We've grown up together, and she’s been by my side every step of the way, both on the field and in life.”
Mike Luzietti and Chloe Whelan have left a lasting mark on West Haven High School through their leadership, dedication, and passion for lacrosse. As they prepare to take on new challenges in college—both on and off the field—their work ethic and character stand as an inspiration to younger athletes. The legacy they leave behind will continue to shape the program for years to come.
