AthletesLeadership shows up early, and that has already been clear at West Haven High School through seniors Cole Hill and Lisa Hennessey. Cole has stepped into his role as a captain for the boys lacrosse team as a midfielder, while Lisa is leading the girls tennis team as a singles player. Even at the start of the season, both have set the tone for their teams.

For Cole, one moment stood out as a defining point. “Beating Meriden to play Fairfield Prep in the schools first ever states game was a huge accomplishment for not only me but our entire team,” he said. He reflected on how the group transformed its identity over time. “We went from the 0-16 team everyone wanted to schedule to a state’s bound team in only one year, and we did it because we did everything as a family, not just a team.”

Lisa’s favorite memory came after a milestone victory. “My favorite memory from being on the girls tennis team was after our first team win at an away game our coach bought all of us food after the game,” she said. “Everyone on the bus was so excited and it was just a super fun and positive bus ride.”

Serving as captains has shaped how both athletes approach leadership. Cole explained, “I’ve learned to be a better communicator and being the person my teammates can rely on.” He added that staying composed has been key to his role. “Keeping calm under pressure and keeping composure after a bad call or physical play would describe my leadership best.”

Lisa focused on the impact of her attitude. “Something I heave learned from being captain this year is to always stay positive even if I lose my match,” she said. She emphasized how her mindset influences the team and how she works to encourage others throughout each match and after it ends.

Both athletes take pride in what they have accomplished beyond their sports. Cole said, “One thing that I am proud of off the field would have to be my grades.” He shared how his teammates pushed him to improve in the classroom and go beyond the minimum. Lisa highlighted her ability to stay balanced. “Off of the field I am able to balance school work with practice,” she said. She also shared her involvement with the unified sports team and her efforts to give back through community initiatives.

Looking ahead, both have clear plans for their futures. Cole will continue his academic and athletic career. “I will be attending Thomas College to continue playing lacrosse and to study criminal justice,” he said. Lisa will also pursue her goals at the next level. “After high school I will be attending Quinnipiac University majoring in diagnostic medical sonography to become an ultrasound technician,” she shared.

Each athlete credits the people around them for helping shape who they are. Cole spoke about his parents and the role they have played in his journey, from supporting him at games to helping him stay motivated. Lisa reflected on the influence of her family and coaches, explaining how they have guided her growth as both a player and a person while encouraging her to keep improving.

Cole Hill and Lisa Hennessey have each begun to make their mark through their leadership and commitment. Their approach as captains is already setting an example for their teammates as the season moves forward.
