AthletesOlivia Twarowski, senior captain for the Girls Hockey team, and Matthew Morgan, senior captain for the Boys Basketball team, have been guiding their teams this season with strong leadership and dedication. Their presence on and off the field continues to influence teammates and strengthen the West Haven Athletics community.

Olivia reflected on her favorite memories saying “My favorite memory from a former season was when my freshman year we won SCCs. Experiencing what my team was capable of as a freshman really helped me grow into the captain I am today. Winning again my junior year was also special because we worked so hard as a team.” Matthew shared his favorite memory saying “Our Springfield trip last year was incredible. Spending two days playing basketball and making memories with my teammates was something I’ll always remember.” Both memories show how meaningful experiences on and off the field shape their leadership and commitment to their teams.

When asked what they have learned from being a captain, Olivia said “Even if I'm not able to support on the ice due to an injury, I can still support them from the sidelines while I recover. Watching my teammates play helps me see exactly what they need to improve as players.” Matthew added “Being a captain isn’t just a title. You have to lead by word and example. It’s my responsibility to make sure my teammates are properly representing the program and school.” Their insights reflect how their guidance goes beyond personal performance and shapes the culture and effort of their entire teams.

Off the field and ice, both athletes take pride in accomplishments outside of sports. Olivia shared “I’m proud of the connections I’ve made through hockey and other clubs, like theatre. They motivate me to be a better person and give me experiences I can carry into the future.” Matthew explained “I’m proud of my grades. Balancing high-level courses, basketball, and other responsibilities isn’t easy, but I strive to be a great student.” Their dedication in academics and extracurriculars complements the leadership they show in athletics.

Looking ahead, Olivia said “My plans for after high school aren’t fully decided but I know I’ll be going to school in Massachusetts. I'm still deciding between Western New England and UMass Boston. I hope to major in social work so I can be a social worker or psychologist in schools. I want to help students so they can have an easier time at school. I hope to play hockey in college if I'm given the chance.” Matthew shared “I will be attending college for sports medicine and training. As an athlete myself, I want to help others recover and perform at their best.” Both athletes are using the lessons from their leadership roles to guide their future goals and ambitions.

When asked who has influenced them most, Olivia said “My mom has helped me become the person I am today. Even though she might not know hockey well, she always gives advice on and off the ice and makes sure I get to practices and games, even when she’s busy.” Matthew shared “Coach Bobby has impacted my life greatly. Since middle school, he’s believed in me and guided me. He’s a big reason I am where I am today and serves as a role model for me and my teammates.” Their support systems have helped shape the leaders they are today both on and off the field.

Olivia and Matthew’s experiences this season show how they have shaped the Blue Devils, leaving a meaningful impact on their teammates and the program while reflecting the values they bring to every moment on the ice and court. Their example inspires those around them and sets a standard for what it means to be a Blue Devil.
