Seniors Bryan Monge and Yusef Turner, captains of the boys varsity soccer team and boys varsity football team, have each made a strong impact on West Haven Athletics through their leadership, hard work, and commitment to their teams. Both have set a standard for teamwork and dedication, inspiring their teammates both on and off the field.
When asked about their favorite memories from their seasons, Bryan reflected, “My favorite memory from this season has to be scoring a hat trick on senior night — that moment felt amazing and unforgettable. Another special memory was winning the division with the lads after all the hard work we put in throughout the season. Both moments reminded me how much we’ve grown as a team and how much effort it took to reach that point.” Yusef shared, “Receiving a scholar athlete scholarship from the ‘Great American Rivalry Series’ was an honor to have been recognized for my hard work and dedication in the classroom and on field throughout the years.” This recognition reflects Yusef’s commitment to balancing academics and athletics, as well as the consistency he has maintained throughout his high school career.
On what they’ve learned from being captains, Bryan said, “Being a captain has taught me that leadership requires bravery and courage. You have to be willing to step into uncomfortable situations, take responsibility, and lead by example. I’ve learned how important it is to encourage my teammates, keep the energy positive, and make sure everyone stays focused on our goals.” Yusef added, “One thing I learned from being a captain is selfless service and patience. I’ve learned to place the needs of my teammates before myself because we are all one unit after all.” His response demonstrates his understanding that leadership is not just about personal performance, but about supporting the team and fostering unity.
Regarding pride in accomplishments off the field, Bryan stated, “Off the field, I’m proud of helping the team raise money on the weekends through things like car washes and shake-a-can events. It showed me how much effort goes into supporting the team beyond just playing the game. I enjoy giving back and working together with my teammates outside of soccer.” Yusef said, “Being able to prioritize my education before football has always been important to me.” While shorter, this statement reflects Yusef’s dedication to academics and personal growth, highlighting the discipline required to balance schoolwork and athletics successfully.
When asked who has helped shape them into the people they are today, Bryan credited his parents. “They’ve always pushed me to exceed my limits and give 100% in everything I do, especially in the things I’m passionate about. Their support and advice have motivated me to stay disciplined and never settle for less than my best.” Yusef pointed to his mother. “Without my mom I wouldn’t have fallen in love with the sport I play today or even be as competitive as I am in the classroom.” Their responses show the impact family has had on their development, instilling values of perseverance, focus, and a strong work ethic.
Looking toward the future, Yusef shared, “My plans after high school are to further my education by attending college. In college, I plan on pursuing a nursing degree.” His goal demonstrates a clear commitment to personal growth and helping others, a continuation of the leadership qualities he has shown on the field.
Bryan and Yusef have proven themselves as athletes who lead by example. As captains, they have earned the respect of their teammates and coaches through their work ethic, dedication, and ability to keep their teams focused and motivated. Their accomplishments on and off the field reflect the kind of athletes and leaders they are, and both have a bright future ahead, carrying the lessons from their time at West Haven into whatever comes next.
