West Haven Public Schools Celebrates Unsung Heroes at Annual Recognition Dinner
On a heartfelt evening filled with gratitude and celebration, the 2025 Unsung Hero Recipient Dinner was held on May 15th at West Haven High School, shining a well-deserved spotlight on the dedicated individuals who quietly make a powerful impact within our schools every single day.
Each school in the district selected one honoree to recognize as their "Unsung Hero"—a title given to those who go above and beyond in their roles, often without fanfare or recognition. From security guards and speech pathologists to custodians, secretaries, and classroom aides, these individuals are the backbone of West Haven Public Schools, providing support, care, and consistency to both staff and students alike.
Among the honored guests was Amanda Murillo, the main secretary at Mackrille Elementary School. Known for her warm demeanor and unmatched organizational skills, Amanda is often the first friendly face students and families encounter when they walk through the doors of Mackrille. Her dedication to the school community has not gone unnoticed by her colleagues.
When asked what being part of the West Haven Public Schools community means to her, Amanda shared:
"Being part of the West Haven school community is deeply meaningful to me because it allows me to give back to the very school that has supported, encouraged, and provided countless opportunities for my own four daughters—who are my greatest joys. This connection has shaped my experience in profound ways, as I've had the privilege of being involved in many different areas within the school system: lunch aid, room mother, and PTA member. These experiences have not only broadened my understanding of how the school operates but have also enriched my ability to serve effectively in my current role as Mackrille School Secretary. I bring both knowledge and heartfelt commitment, always striving to contribute in ways that reflect my dedication to the students and staff who make up this West Haven school community."
Superintendent Neil Cavallaro praised the honorees during the event, stating, “Our schools would not be what they are without the heart and hard work of these incredible individuals. Tonight is about recognizing those who don't always get the spotlight but deserve it every day.”
As the district continues its mission to provide a nurturing and effective learning environment for all students, events like the Unsung Hero Dinner serve as a powerful reminder of the people who help make that mission a reality—not just through their job descriptions, but through their kindness, patience, and unwavering dedication.
