Seniors Madden Evangeliste and Leo Mazuroski have each made a strong impact on West Haven Athletics as captains of their respective teams. Madden, a shooting guard for the girls varsity basketball team, and Leo, a defenseman for the boys varsity ice hockey team, have demonstrated leadership through their work ethic, resilience, and commitment to their teammates, setting the tone both in competition and beyond.
When reflecting on favorite memories, Madden shared, “My favorite memory from being on the girls basketball team was the first game of junior year. I had been out the season prior because of an ACL tear. This moment is special to me because after a year of recovering and pushing myself to come back, I was finally able to. I got to return to such a positive environment with some of my best friends on the court right beside me.” Leo said, “I would say my favorite memory would have to be when I scored my first varsity goal last season against North Haven.”
Both captains spoke about the lessons they have learned through leadership. Madden added, “Being a captain this year has taught me responsibility, commitment, and most importantly leadership. I held myself to the standard that I would tell my teammates what they need to hear rather than what they want to hear, allowing them to reach their fullest potential. At the end of the day, we all have the same goal of winning in the sport we love.” Leo explained, “I’ve learned that being a leader isn’t always about being the loudest or in charge. It’s about setting an example for your teammates, whether it’s on or off the ice. How I act, work, and treat others is a representation of the whole team, so being positive and accountable goes a long way.”
Off the playing surface, Madden said, “Off the court I am proud of how I hold myself to a high standard in both school and other hobbies. I’ve learned to balance my grades, school activities, and fitness goals. Managing all of these responsibilities has taught me time management and serves as a reminder how lucky I am to be committed to so many meaningful things.” Leo shared, “I am proud of how I have been able to keep myself at a high standard while balancing school, responsibilities, and my commitment to the team.”
When asked who has helped shape them into the people they are today, Madden shared, “I thank my dad for guiding me into the person I am today. He has supported me through every phase of life, being present at every game, award, and event. He has taught me the importance of strength, hard work, and generosity. I hope one day I am half as selfless as he is.” Leo said, “I would have to say my dad because he has always been the number one person that has told me right from wrong my entire life. After every game, he was there to talk about how I played and what he thought I could’ve done better. Even away from hockey, he has always been there to guide me in the right direction.”
Looking ahead, Madden added, “After high school, I plan to attend either Providence College or Sacred Heart University. I will be majoring in health science. I hope one day to become a physician assistant. In the future I aim to help people and offer support during some of their most vulnerable moments.” Leo said, “After high school, I will be attending the University of New Haven studying business management, and I also will play for the club hockey team.”
Madden Evangeliste and Leo Mazuroski exemplify what it means to lead as captains within West Haven Athletics. Through dedication, and a team-first mindset, they have earned the respect of their teammates and coaches. Their accomplishments on and off the ice and court reflect their character, and both are well prepared to carry the lessons learned through sports into the next chapter of their lives.
