Principal’s Minute

Dr. Anthony J. Cordone

Achievement: CMT ended Thursday, March 18th. Therefore, due to review and the actual test taking, there weren’t as many grades as usual to calculate for this mid- marking- period grade report. However, there is plenty of time for students to achieve high grades before the end of marking period 3.

Warm Weather: We are hopefully going to see warmer weather, and with that, will come the summer fashions. Please be aware of the dress attire your child is buying and remind your child of the school/board of education policy for appropriate dress.

Reminder: Parent Visiting Night for Bailey is Wednesday March 24th. School will be in session from 7:42am to 12:11pm. and visiting hours will be 6:30pm to 8:30pm.

Coming Soon in April; A representative from the Milford Crisis/Rape Center and Officer Jefferson will meet with our students to continue the informative discussion of issues for personal safety/unwanted touching, sexting, bullying, and the legal consequences. If you do not want your child to be involved with such discussions, please send me a written note and I will arrange an alternate site for your child.

Congratulations: “Going for the GOLD” in the academics and arts

  •  Michael Kiaunis won state honors in the PTSA Reflections Program for his video production, “Beauty Is,” and will compete in the nationals (we may have a possible future Oscar winner).
  •  Carly Reynolds, a Bailey 8th grader, has won the West Haven district wide Spelling Bee and will compete in the Connecticut State competition on March 23rd. Ana Garcia, our 6th grade winner, was one of the runner-ups.
  •   Ahmad-Fikri Anuar will represent Bailey and West Haven in the state finals competition on March 13th for Math Counts”.

Assistant Principal

Ms. Valerie Bruneau

Just a reminder: Please take note on when RI/MA payments are due. Although most people have turned in all their payments on time so far, (thank you)… we are on a deadline and Dattco expects final payment on the schedule provided.

GRADE 6

Team 6

MATH - The first two weeks of March the students will be taking the Connecticut Mastery Test.  There will be 3 days of math testing.  I will not be sending homework home with the students for those two weeks.  Please be sure that your child comes to school well rested and on time.  We've been working diligently to prepare, and I am confident that students will succeed.  We will begin our next unit on ratios, proportions, and percentages after the CMT. Mrs. Dottori

ENGLISH - The students completed a unit on commonly misspelled/misused words. This was a great review for the CMTs. The students also did a fantastic job writing compare/contrast essays.  I was very happy with their improved writing skills. There will be no homework during CMTs in English. After the CMTs, we will have a spelling unit on homonyms/homophones.  A pronoun unit will follow. Remind students to get a good night's rest and eat a healthy breakfast on the days of the test. Good luck! Mrs.Healy.

MATHCOUNTS CLUB

By Mrs. Anastasio & Mr. Hemming

Congratulations to our MATHCOUNTS team for doing a terrific job at the Regional Competition on Saturday, Feb 6th at Yale. For our first time competing, the team came in 7 out of 17. Congratulations, also, to Ahmad- Fikri Anuar for making it to the individual Final 8 in the Countdown Round and for qualifying for the MATHCOUNTS State Competition. We wish him lots of luck when he competes on March 13th

Our club will continue to meet every Tuesday after school in A102 until the beginning of May.  Hope to see you there!

Student Council News!

Well - we've made it half way through the year and it has been an exciting year!  Here are a few of our accomplishments:

1.  We raised $40.00 with our first box tops return - Cool - FREE MONEY FOR OUR SCHOOL!

2.  We also raised $1,500.00 for the Save the Children Foundation (Haiti Fund).

Mrs. Rovinelli and Mrs. Pucillo must take a moment to sincerely thank all of the Bailey community.  The student council set a goal to raise $1,000.00 for the Save the Children Foundation and surpassed that goal by $500.00 - this truly speaks volumes about our community.

3.  We donated $400.00 to two different Haitian families in our community that still have immediate family in Haiti that were affected by the earthquake.

Our next student council meeting will be Thursday, March 11, 2010 in the cafe at 2:15pm.

Reminder - Box Top Collection:

The next box top collection is due at the end of March - KEEP CLIPPING!

Thank you all for your support - Happy Spring!

HOME ECONOMICS NEWS

In the next few weeks students in Home Economics will be helping to raise funds for the Home Economics department. They will be selling mini cookbooks. Some of the titles include Irresistible Cookies, Just Like Grandma Used to Make, Busy Mom’s Cookbook, 5 Ingredients or Less, Crockery Cooking, and Better Health. These cookbooks make wonderful gifts for friends, relatives, and teachers for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Birthday’s or any day. Please help our students by purchasing cookbooks.

From The Nurses’ Desk

Dear Parents:

I don’t know about you, but I can’t believe that spring is just around the corner: Finally…

Just a reminder: It is a good idea to keep the Poison Control Help Line along with your pediatrician’s phone numbers on or near your phone. Poison Control Help Line phone number is: 1-800-222-1222.

Sports Physical reminder: Tryouts for softball and baseball will be at the end of the month.

Students playing any sport must have a current sports physical that is on file with the school nurse. Sports physicals are good for 13 months from date of the physical.  Sports physicals must be done on the Connecticut Pre-participation Sports Evaluation form.  Your child must have this into the nurse to be cleared to try-out for any school sport. Your child can get the necessary forms from the coach or the school nurse. If you have any questions about this, please call the medical office at 203 937-4387.

Mobile Dentists and its Smile Programs are coming to Bailey Middle School March 31, 2010, from 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. See enclosed brochure with further details. Permission slips will be going out next week. If you are interested in having your child seen by them, please return the slips to the medical office as soon as possible. We will be co-coordinating with the staff at Smiles to help schedule appointments etc.

Thank you,

Christine Bartley RN and JoAnn Montz RN
