  back to school
It feels like just yesterday we were celebrating the beginning of summer and saying goodbye for break! But it's already time for "back to school," and we're excited to welcome our students, staff and parents to the 2015-2016 school year this coming Thursday, August 27. Some important reminders for all schools and grades:

*The first day of school on Aug. 27 is a full day for all grades, including kindergarten (this is the first year for all-day kindergarten in all six elementary schools).
*Bus routes will be in full effect. To see updated routes for the year, click here.
*Breakfast and lunch (click for menus) will be served starting on the first day of school.
*Anyone who may be eligible for free or reduced meal prices should submit an application as soon as possible. They are due by Oct. 1. Click here for an FAQ on the program and to print a copy of the application.
*Parents should notify their school if their child is not taking the bus for the first few days of school or for the year.
*Kindergartners will not be allowed off the bus without a parent or guardian there to greet their child. Due to the implementation of the full-day kindergarten this year, no child in that grade will receive door-to-door bus service.
*Families will be receiving school letters about their students’ assigned teachers and rooms within the next few days, if they haven’t received them already.
*Students should arrive on the first day of school with a backpack, pencil and folder. Lists of any additional school supplies needed may be distributed to students then, if the lists haven’t yet been announced by students’ teachers.
*Students of all grades (including new kindergarten families) must provide two proofs of residency to their school, as per the district’s annual requirement. Acceptable proofs include copies of a lease or mortgage statement and copies of utility, phone or cable bills. Families should fax or bring the proofs of residency to school before classes start, or students can bring the proofs of residency on the first day of school.

Due to upcoming WHHS building renovations, school buses picking up students at WHHS at dismissal will now line up on either side of the sidewalk island in the back parking lot. They will no longer line up next to the courtyard at dismissal. In the morning, WHHS buses will now drop off students at the courtyard, and no longer at the G-wing door.

• Students in any grades needing medication to be administered by school staff must have a written order from their health care provider.

New students and children entering kindergarten who have not yet completed a physical exam cannot start school until it is completed.

Students who are new to the district and still need to register will not be able to start school the same day they register.

Orientation held for new teachers, freshmen
collage

Orientations were held this week for West Haven High School freshmen and new teachers starting in schools across the district. Freshmen received their schedules, got tours of WHHS, heard advice and tips from upperclassmen in the Peer Advocates group, participated in a scavenger hunt, watched a "fashion show" of "Dos and Don'ts" for the WHHS dress code, met WHHS teachers, and were entered into a raffle. Peer Advocates will also be available on the first day of school to offer help to any new students who need it. At the new staff members orientation, teachers met with district administrators and participated in workshops focusing on topics like special education and English Language Learners.
