Senior Showcase: Grads to pursue nursing
senior showcase

The Senior Showcase is a series that highlights West Haven High School graduating seniors.
A pair of new West Haven High School graduates who became certified nursing assistants through a WHHS class are hoping to take things a step further and become registered nurses by studying at Southern Connecticut State University. Maria Nahuatlato and Blair Ludoviconi, members of the WHHS Class of 2015, head off to SCSU in a few weeks and will be considered students on the nursing pathway while taking prerequisite courses before applying to officially get into the school’s nursing program.

They will also each benefit from a $1,000 scholarship called the Frederick Giovannini Award, which was established in 2013 for WHHS students attending SCSU by WHHS and SCSU alumnus Frederick Giovannini, who passed away in 2011. Each year, new WHHS grads who attend SCSU get a $1,000 scholarship from the fund; this year, Ludoviconi and Nahuatlato and 22 other Westies received one of the awards.

The CNA class at WHHS gave Ludoviconi and Nahuatlato a sampling of life in the medical field through a clinical period spent at a local medical facility, but both have previous related experience that contributed to their career decision. To read more about their stories, click here.
