Some West Haven High School students are continuing their studies this summer, but they're not just sitting behind desks jotting down notes and doing homework. Ten WHHS students are enrolled in University of New Haven summer academies, completing hands-on projects with students from other schools and even other countries, working with UNH professors and local teachers (including WHHS math teachers Robin Ferreira and Joanie Amato, who were selected to work with the program this summer), and using advanced technology and computer software. The students received scholarships to participate, thanks to the West Haven Public School District's partnership with UNH. Students can apply each spring for programs like Team-based Engineering, Summer Finance Academy and Crime Scene Investigation. In photos above, WHHS student Marquis Lockhart, with help from Mrs. Ferreira, works on a small robot; WHHS student Adnan Sumra displays a wind-powered vehicle; and Andres Pachecco conducts an experiment in a biotechnology academy.

The WHHS honor roll for the 4th quarter has been released. Click here to view the list.

The new school year's calendar has been updated to reflect Parent Visiting Day/Night changes regarding kindergarten. Since kindergarten is now a full-day program, parent conferences for kindergarten will all be on the same day as the other elementary grades. Click here to view the updated version (it has also been uploaded to all school websites).

Student volunteers are needed for the West Fest event Aug. 29 on the West Haven Green. The event will showcase businesses, crafters and vendors and feature performances and activities like pie-eating contests. WHHS students interested in volunteering may email Mia Sumra at msumr1@unh.newhaven.edu.

  Senior Showcase: BOE student reps

The Senior Showcase is a series that highlights West Haven High School graduating seniors.

If the past four years at WHHS are any indication, it’s a safe bet: Jesus Yanez and Alice Obas will be familiar names to everyone at two prestigious Northeast college campuses in no time. They left their mark on WHHS and will surely do the same at their next destination. Yanez heads to Yale University this fall, and Obas will be attending Williams College in Massachusetts. The two recent WHHS grads served as Board of Education student representatives for the past two years and are known for being involved in everything from academic competitions, to community service activities, to school clubs.
