Three West Haven High School sophomores and a Carrigan Intermediate School fifth-grader were named winners in the Energize CT eesmarts Statewide Student Contest and recently visited the State Capitol for an award ceremony. They also got a chance to meet Governor Malloy. The WHHS students, Bertha Appia, Tatyanna Alvarado and Brisa Cruz, won second place for the high-school level for writing a plan to save energy in West Haven through the use of shower timers in homes. Carrigan student Jason Ardito won third place in the fifth-grade category for writing a review about "The Lorax" Dr. Seuss book, in response to a writing prompt regarding books that teach about conservation of natural resources.
Bailey takes top honors at music competition

The Bailey Middle School band and choir performed at Six Flags New England June 5 in the "Music in the Parks" competition with teachers Rachel Mekeel, Diana Rock and Samantha Ross, and took home two first-place trophies with "excellence" ratings.
     
 News and Notes
• 
WHHS junior Susie Beyl is one of two students in the state selected as a student representative for the state Board of Education. 

Registration for new students will be held in July, August and September at Molloy School. It is strongly recommended that new students register at a session during summer break. Click here for the schedule. 

 The West Haven Public Library main branch is holding a summer reading program kick-off Tuesday, June 16, from 4-7 p.m. Attendees can register for the Summer Reading Program, earn prizes, and meet Rocky the Rock Cat.

  Introducing: WHHS valedictorian & salutatorian

The West Haven High School Class of 2015 valedictorian is Hailey Dias, and the salutatorian is Kharl Reynado. Both will be speaking at the June 18 graduation ceremony in Ken Strong Stadium before the senior class of more than 330 students. Hailey will be heading to Quinnipiac University to pursue a major in psychology, with plans to later continue her education in graduate school. She hopes to one day work in the West Haven education system to help students and later to work with adults. Kharl will be attending the University of Connecticut in the Special Program of Law, with plans to later attend law school and become an attorney. Additionally, she will major in either physics or economics. 

End-of-year reminders for all grades
*The last day of school is Thursday, June 18.
*The last three days of school are half-days.
*Lunch will be served through the end of school.
*Families are reminded to pay any remaining balances on student meal accounts.  
*Look for information soon on the summer reading program.
