  broadway visit
West Haven High School Theatre Workshop members got quite a surprise this week when Beth Leavel, Tony winner for "The Drowsy Chaperone" Broadway show, visited them for a Q & A session in the WHHS auditorium. They had been told they were going to have a Skype video-conference session with some Broadway folks, as Leavel's visit was a secret. As they prepared for the "video-conference," WHHSTW Co-director Sean Maher pretended to have some computer problems and announced he was bringing in "an expert to fix them." Beth then walked in, stunning many of the students, as they are performing "The Drowsy Chaperone" for this year's spring musical. The theater group is set to perform "The Drowsy Chaperone" on Thursday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, May 2, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. More information will be posted when tickets go on sale.

  Carrigan teacher publishes 2nd novel
rye hill

Carrigan Intermediate School teacher Robin Cannon was proud to see her first novel, “Tilly Fig,” released last spring after years of writing and searching for the right publisher. But she knew there was more of the characters’ story that needed to be told. Now she’s releasing her second book, “Rye Hill,” which she’s calling a prequel to her first novel, as it focuses on childhood events that made a lasting impact on a main character of “Tilly Fig.” “Tilly Fig” follows the adventures of a young girl named Tilly, her relationship with a close friend named Skeet, and her quest to solve a murder mystery years later when she is an adult. “Rye Hill” jumps between the past and present to delve deeper into Skeet’s past, a horrific event he witnessed, and his relationship with his parents. "Rye Hill" is officially being released on May 1. Two of her children are in the cover photo of her first book, and her nephew is on the cover of her second. And if the scenery on the “Rye Hill” cover looks familiar, that’s because the photo was taken at Savin Rock.
