District schools took time to celebrate reading this week in honor of Read Across America Day. The annual event is recognized at schools nationwide on the March 2 birthday of Dr. Seuss. Each district school planned ways to mark the occasion. At Washington Elementary School, older students paired with younger pupils for “buddy reading.” At Alma E. Pagels Elementary School, Principal Gary Palermo dressed as the Cat in the Hat and read “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” to the entire school. Teachers across the district dressed up classroom doors with decorations depicting books that helped them become readers. SCSU baseball team volunteers at Forest
The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team, led by Coach Tim Shea, volunteered with Forest students in February as part of a new partnership. The student-athletes played basketball, wiffle ball, red light/green light, and duck, duck goose with students during recess. Giving youngsters a chance to interact with college students helps introduce them at a young age to the idea of attending a university, as well as what opportunities may lie ahead after high school graduation.

WHHS sophomore sets long jump record
West Haven High School sophomore Brandon Sebastian was named the top student-athlete for the long jump indoor track event in all of New England last weekend and has also set a new school record. Sebastian competed at the New England High School Indoor Track and Field Championship at the end of February in Boston, having come in second place in the long jump at the state open earlier last month. But at the New England competition, he took first place, jumping 23 feet, 4 inches. The accomplishment beat the old WHHS record of 20 feet, 10 inches. He now advances to nationals in New York. Brandon is also a member of the Blue Devils football team and outdoor track team and hopes to get a scholarship to college through either football or track.
