  renaissance
West Haven High School honors U.S. History students showcased songs, poetry, film, dance and paintings of the Harlem Renaissance Friday in honor of Black History Month. The two history classes each put on a show to highlight key figures and artwork of the time period. One class told the story of the Harlem Renaissance through the eyes of a high school student who goes back in time and visits a speakeasy, movie theater and jazz club. In a performance put on by the second class, the lead character attempts to win back his girlfriend through the types of song, dance, film, poetry and painting that defined the Harlem Renaissance. Guest judges announced the second class won the informal contest and complimented both groups on their use of vernacular and historical references. Click here for a video of a musical performance from the shows.
