Bailey Middle School's sustained silent reading program launched earlier this fall and has been well-received in the classroom. Students are given 20 minutes during English Language Arts periods to dive into a great book of their choice or from the classroom libraries, which were expanded this fall. Students are proud of how many books they've read during these periods. In the photo above, they're holding signs with the number of books they've finished since the sustained silent reading blocks began.
Mackrille principal earns Heart Association honor
Edith E. Mackrille Elementary School Principal Judith Drenzek has been named the 2013-2014 Connecticut American Heart Association Heart Partner for promoting health- and nutrition-related educational programs at the school. Over the past year, she's brought a “teaching garden” to her building and involved students in caring for the crops, used produce from the garden in the cafeteria, and held a Jump Rope for Heart event.

  Sikorsky employees mentor student-athletes

More than a dozen employees of Sikorsky Aircraft have donated their time and expertise to mentor eight West Haven High School football players over the past few months and are expected to continue working with them in the New Year. While the mentors have helped the team with fundraisers, attended games, and welcomed the students for a tour of the company’s facility in Stratford, the program's focus has been helping the students understand their post-high school options. The initiative began last spring as mentors met with school officials and were introduced to the eight student-athletes, who were recommended by coaches and whose parents approved their participation. This fall the program gained steam as mentors began meeting with the student-athletes at least once a month in a WHHS classroom to talk about the future, with each session focusing on a specific topic, like course selections, college and career options.

Students spread holiday cheer in schools, community
West Haven Public Schools have been holding concerts, decorating classrooms, performing in the community, and holding food and toy drives to spread some holiday cheer. In the photos above, Bailey Middle School Jr. National Honor Society students perform Christmas songs at Seacrest Retirement Center, and Savin Rock Community School doors are decorated for a contest.
