Math/Literacy Nights start for 2014-15
    reading night     carrigan
Family math and reading events will be held again this year in schools to give students extra learning opportunities and provide parents with another way to be involved in their children’s education. Carrigan Intermediate School, Washington Elementary School and Savin Rock Community School held literacy nights this week. Each after-school gathering offers educational games and activities, typically focusing on one academic discipline and particular skill-building strategies. Schools will hold such events nearly every month. Math nights offer teamwork tasks relating to a math topic being taught in the classroom and sometimes include crafts that can be used as math review tools at home. Literacy nights often feature a guest reader (seen in the photo above) who puts on an interactive presentation and information from teachers about how parents can help kids become better readers. Look for information from your school on your next math or literacy night.
McDonald's ribbon-cutting features Carrigan performance, school donation
Carrigan Intermediate School chorus members performed the National Anthem at the Friday afternoon ribbon-cutting of a new McDonald's on Saw Mill Road. McDonald's representatives also donated $2,500 to West Haven Public Schools for school supplies and equipment, with a pledge to become a new district partner and help with fundraising events and reading initiatives.

WHHS students assist in water monitoring
 field trip

A West Haven High School Environmental Science class conducted water tests this week with the goal of assisting the Regional Water Authority in ongoing water quality monitoring. Students visited Sleeping Giant State Park, the Whitney Water Museum and a few other spots to collect and test water this week with WHHS teacher Dr. Regina Milano. The work was part of an ongoing partnership with the Regional Water Authority and part of Project WATER. The data collected by students will be entered into a database and used to measure and predict water quality in watersheds. In the photo above, WHHS students use a special tool to evaluate water from a river at Sleeping Giant.
