Savin Rock pilots 'Homework Diner'
   homework diner homework diner
A local diner was a homework hotspot Monday evening for Savin Rock Community School first-grade families, but this wasn’t your average eatery. It was the Savin Rock Homework Diner, a pilot program that launched at the school this week and will continue for two more Mondays this month. First-graders and their parents or guardians were served a dinner at school before tackling some reading and writing work with help from teachers and the reading department (as seen in above right photo with Ms. Cincotta and Ms. Gifford). First-grade teacher Shannon Goetze got the idea for the program after seeing a news report last year about a similar initiative at a New Mexico school. The "diner" helps parents make a stronger connection to their child's school and be involved in their youngster's education. Staff members hope the concept will become more popular and expand to other grades and schools.
 Smoothie station visits Washington
smoothies smoothies
Washington Elementary School students got a special treat at lunch Thursday from the Food Service Department--smoothies of spinach, banana, pineapple and yogurt! The best part? The fruit masked the spinach taste, and the kids loved them! The smoothie station will be traveling to other schools this year. It's a great way to show kids how tasty fruits and veggies can be.

WHHS College/Career Fair draws crowd
 college fair

West Haven High School's College/Career Fair was held Wednesday evening in the WHHS gym for parents and students. Attendees got to talk to representatives from colleges, tech schools and the military to learn about programs, majors and what schools are looking for in prospective students. There was also a session for seniors and their parents on the college application process.
