Schools aim to increase at-home reading
bob maxon
District schools often find ways to encourage students to read at home on their own, and Edith E. Mackrille Elementary School and Savin Rock Community School recently kicked off programs aiming to make bookworms out of young Westies. Savin Rock’s “Roaring Readers” program started its second year with help from a lion-costume-clad teacher, while Mackrille recently launched the third year of its “Reading Journey” with guest reader Bob Maxon, NBC Connecticut meteorologist (above). The district is emphasizing the importance of literacy skills, since all subjects--even math--have reading elements. Reading is part of school day lessons and homework, but students should also be reading beyond assignments and classwork. Programs will be supplemented by family literacy nights throughout the year.

You're invited: Science Saturdays at Yale
Yale University offers a program called "Science on Saturdays" to give kids and adults an opportunity to participate in scientific demonstrations, lectures and hands-on learning with Yale professors. West Haven students are encouraged to attend the program, which is free and open to the public. Visit the program's website, or view the flyer.

Upcoming events:

October 18: Debra Fischer (Astronomy), Searching for other Earths

November 15: Ron Breaker (Molecular, cellular and developmental biology), The RNA World

WHHS pep rally celebrates Homecoming
homecoming
West Haven High School held its Homecoming pep rally Thursday, with performances from the band, cheerleaders, dance team and West Steppers, a tug-a-war competition involving clubs and sports teams, a teacher Crossfit challenge, and the presentation of the Homecoming Court. WHHS teacher Mr. Schevling, the event's MC, even joined in with the WHHS band drummers.
The Homecoming Festival scheduled for Saturday has been postponed because of the rainy weather forecast. A new date will be selected for the spring, due to scheduling conflicts in the busy fall season.
