Learning through the teaching garden
mackrille
Students at Edith E. Mackrille Elementary School got a chance to see how produce from their teaching garden can be turned into tomato sauce and pesto in a cafeteria lesson Monday morning that included a taste test! They also harvested some tomatoes and peppers from the garden and were excited to see how much the plants had grown over the summer. The teaching garden was installed last year with help from the American Heart Association, which is aiming to teach youngsters about nutrition and healthy eating. The project also relates to part of the school's science curriculum that teaches about plants. Kudos to the Mackrille parent volunteers who helped take care of the garden this summer and assisted Monday.

District conducting annual school surveys
The district is conducting its annual School Climate Surveys, giving students, parents and staff a chance to offer feedback on their school communities. All answers are kept confidential and will be used to improve our schools and the educational experience for all West Haven kids. The state mandates that all districts administer a School Climate Survey. Parents, please fill out one survey for each school your child(ren) currently attends. The survey should take only a few minutes. All students, grades 1–12 will take the survey in school. We encourage you to take the survey online. If someone doesn't have Internet access, they can request a hard copy from school to complete and return. Thank you for participating.

Click here for the survey for Pagels; Mackrille; Forest; Haley; Savin Rock; Washington; Carrigan; Bailey; and WHHS.
