News & Notes

West Haven Public Schools' Family Resource Center was featured on a WNPR segment this week about summer food programs for kids and nutrition and "food backpack" initiatives for kids and families throughout the school year. Bonnie Hutson from our FRC (based in Savin Rock Community School, but helping families across the city) discussed the importance of these efforts.

• Heading to the library or book store for your child's summer reading? No need to remember to bring a book list or brochure--just check our free cell phone app for all of our schools' summer reading lists.

Special education students born between July 1, 1988, and June 30, 1989, may pick up their school records this summer. Call Special Education/Pupil Services at 203-937-4333 to schedule a time to pick up your file. The Board of Education will be destroying special education records on August 15 for students with those birthdays if it does not receive a written request for your records. Written requests can be mailed or brought when you pick up your file. (The district keeps special education files until students are 27 years old.) Click here for more information.

WHFD, WHPD visit summer school students

‎West Haven firefighters and a police K9 team paid a visit this week to summer school classes attended by special education students and held at Savin Rock Community School. Firefighters gave youngsters an up-close look at a firefighter's uniform and a presentation involving the rescue ladder and a hose in the parking lot. The K9 team gave a demonstration of the dog's skills and how he works with his officer. Staff members also wore special shirts in support of Officer Doyle, who was recently injured in a police training exercise in New York, while students offered up a card they made for him. The visits helped mark the end of this year's summer school session.

School supply donations needed for Westies on Wheels

The Westies on Wheels bus is returning to neighborhoods August 15 to help families celebrate the start of a new school year and ensure West Haven kids have everything they need to begin classes. The tentative schedule includes stops at Spring Heights, Meadow Landing, the Savin Rock Conference Center and St. Paul's Church. But the event needs your help to be a success! Organizers are looking for donations of scissors, markers, colored pencils, rulers and folders, and any other supplies or monetary donations people would like to contribute. Email dana.paredes@whschools.org, lauren.kozlowski@whschools.org or melanie.deninger@whschools.org to donate.
