Art students' chalk drawings brighten boardwalk
chalk art
‎Disney fans are going to want to stop by the Savin Rock Conference Center before the next rainstorm comes to see the "Disney Through the Decades" chalk art display West Haven High School and Bailey Middle School art students created yesterday. Westies of all ages passing by were amazed by our students' talent. Students teamed up to illustrate classics like "Peter Pan" and "Sleeping Beauty" and more recent favorites like "Inside Out" and "WALL-E." Bailey and WHHS students typically dress up the boardwalk during the school district's annual Fine Arts Festival, but were rained out during the event earlier this month. Looks like it was worth the wait.

WHHS honors students at awards ceremonies
WHHS honored students across all grades in various ceremonies this week. Seniors were recognized at Monday's Senior Scholarship Night, where they received scholarships from the PTSA, local organizations and community groups. The Academic Awards Ceremony was held Tuesday to present students with academic awards, college book awards, and leadership honors. This morning, students who have successfully completed honors and advanced placement (college-level) courses were presented with either a certificate, pin, sweatshirt or gold graduation cord, depending on the amount of high school years they have taken such classes. The school also congratulated the 36 seniors who have taken 10 or more of honors and AP classes--valedictorian Jeremy Borelli took the most, with 20! Congratulations to all of our award recipients.

Savin Rock students see WHPD K9 officer demo

West Haven police officers recently offered a K9 demonstration to Savin Rock Community School second-graders. School Resource Officer Kim Bennett facilitated the visit and assisted Officers Scott Bloom and Justin Standish as they put the dogs through their paces. Students were amazed to see how smart WHPD K9s Cody & Ike were as they obeyed every command and worked with their officers. Students also enjoyed learning about how the dogs train, work and go home with their police “dads.”
Boys tennis team DII SCC champs 2nd year in a row
WHHS boys tennis team members earned the title of Division II SCC champions for the second year in a row yesterday under the leadership of WHHS teacher and Coach Jason Kirck. The team played Hamden at Yale University Tennis Courts. The team's victory was covered in a New Haven Register story.

Bailey Middle School students Winnie Jiang and Brendan Carew are the school's Scholar-Leaders of the Year. They were recently honored by the Connecticut Association of Schools, which recognizes one boy and one girl from each middle school in CT who have distinguished themselves in scholarship and leadership in school and in the community.
