WHHS holds College Signing Day celebration
college signing day
West Haven High School and its School Counseling Department held its College Signing Day event today for seniors and their parents. More than 100 students participated in the celebration. As students crossed the auditorium stage, their names and colleges or military branches were announced, and they were invited to sign their names on a special banner.

The featured speaker was WHHS 2013 grad Brenda Calderon, who now attends Yale University and is double majoring in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and the History of Science, Medicine, and Public Health. At Yale, she was recently awarded the Science, Technology, and Research Scholars Fellowship for her research in Biomedical Engineering, and she serves as president of the Undergraduate Women in Science at Yale group. She was appointed to serve on advisory committees for both the Dean of Yale College and the Dean of Science and Quantitative Reasoning. She is also a student coordinator at Yale's Latino Cultural Center and Yale's Head Delegate for the Latino Ivy League Conference, and volunteers in the community.

K-12 & PreK art shows highlight student talent
arts festival

The school district's annual Fine Arts Festival drew a great crowd Wednesday evening at the Savin Rock Conference Center. Attendees were treated to K-12 artwork, the WHHS senior art show, some opera, and dance, band and school play performances. This year's level of talent drew many compliments from families and art fans. The PreK Art Show on Thursday at the conference center was also a hit, with youngsters showing off artwork made at area preK and School Readiness sites and partaking in crafts and spring-themed activities.

"Walk-in" unites teachers, students, families, community leaders
walk-in

The district kicked off the school day Tuesday morning at Savin Rock Community School with a special event and "walk-in" aimed at supporting public schools and education. Teachers and staff, PTA representatives, students and their families, and city and school administrators gathered together in the Savin Rock gym to hear essays from fourth-graders about why they love school, hear from school leaders, sing a song about West Haven, and walk into school for the day hand-in-hand.

Students see Young People's Concert in New Haven
symphony
Students from the West Haven High School Band, Washington Elementary School and Forest Elementary School were treated to Bach, Beethoven and Mozart Tuesday morning at the Young People's Concert by the New Haven Symphony Orchestra at Yale's Woolsey Hall. The interactive show also broke down beats and notes to show youngsters what goes into composing a piece of music. This is the second year in a row West Haven schools have attended the symphony.
WHHS softball press box named for Tinker Blake

The press box at Frank Biondi Softball Field on the West Haven High School campus was named for Thomas “Tinker” Blake in a Thursday ceremony right before a home softball game. Superintendent Neil Cavallaro, Athletic Director Jon Capone and former WHHS softball Coach Frank Biondi spoke at the event to honor Blake, a 1974 WHHS grad and lifelong Westie who attended the ceremony with his family. Blake was previously known as the voice of the WHHS girls softball team, serving for at least a dozen years as the game announcer from the time the team’s press box was built and while his two daughters played on the team. He also announced for all SCC championship games and CIAC state championship games for softball, which have been hosted on the WHHS field for the past 15 years. Blake, who was diagnosed with multiple systems atrophy a few years ago, has also been involved in the West Haven Penalty Box Club, West Haven Youth Hockey, the West Haven Twilight League - Amateur Baseball, and the WHHS Athletic Hall of Fame. He also oversaw the creation of the West Haven Football Alumni Association in 2009.
