News & Notes


The WHHS half-day of school and Parent Visiting Night are scheduled for WHHS this Monday, March 28. (They were previously scheduled for an earlier date, but were changed due to inclement weather.)

There will be no Adult Ed classes Monday, March 28, due to WHHS Parent Visiting Night.

WHHS seniors are reminded to take the Senior Scholarship Survey in order to be considered for scholarships from the WHHS Scholarship Committee. The survey is on Naviance. Click the "About Me" tab and then click the survey on the left.

West Haven High School students Kristjana Hyka and Brittany Tulchin were chosen as Rotary Club of West Haven Students of the Month for February.

The annual K-12 Fine Arts Festival is set for May 4 at the Savin Rock Conference Center. The annual PreK Art Show is set for May 5 at the conference center with West Haven schools and area PreK programs participating.

Public ice skating at Bennett Rink is done for the season.

The West Haven Public Library is holding a financial aid comparison workshop for high school seniors and their parents on April 6 at the main branch on Elm Street. The library is also holding a "dot art" event on April 2 for ages 12 and up.

The WHHS PTSA has two fundraisers coming up. The first is a "paint social" fundraiser March 29 at Full Circle Pizza from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for $40 per person. Sign up here. The second event is a casino trip April 2 from 4-10:30 p.m. The cost is $40. Participants will receive a $10 gambling voucher and a $15 food voucher. Email mjmr369@yahoo.com to sign up.



WHHS College/Career Night Thursday, 3/31

The WHHS School Counseling Department and WHHS Career Center are hosting College/Career Connection Night for grades 9-11 on Thursday, March 31, 6-8 p.m. at WHHS. The event is free. If you need free transportation, contact patricia.strosnick@whschools.org or 203-937-4360 ext.7106.

--Hear from college reps about what they look for in a high school transcript

--Hear from college reps about schools that don't require SAT/ACT tests
--Get an overview of ways to pay for college
--Explore alternatives to college--trade school, certificate programs, the military
--Learn key steps WHHS juniors should take to prepare for college/career

College reps from Bryant, Roger Williams, UConn, UNH and Wesleyan will be part of the program. There will also be a free raffle. Raffle prizes:

--A spot on the fall WHHS Campus Connection overnight college visit trip (worth $180)
--a Kindle
--Westie wear
--Subway gift cards

Kindergarten registration is next week from Tuesday through Thursday at Molloy School.
Those who have appointments are reminded to bring their child with them and to bring the necessary registration paperwork. Those who have been instructed to complete the online registration form should complete the form before their appointment. The form can be found by clicking here. If you have any questions, call 203-937-4300 ext. 7118. We look forward to meeting our new kindergartners next week.


WHHS relay team wins states, places 6th in New England

The Board of Education at Monday's meeting honored members of the West Haven High School 4x200 indoor track relay team for winning the Connecticut State Open in the 200 Medley Relay and then placing 6th in the New England High School Indoor Championships in Boston this winter. Congratulations to Westies Drew Highsmith, Jeffrey Flores, Abdoul Aremu and Talon Butler. The team members also broke a WHHS record this year, and then even beat their own record later in the season. Pictured with the team are Athletic Director Jon Capone, BOE Chairman James Morrissey, Coach Modestine Vaughn and Superintendent of Schools Neil C. Cavallaro.

WHHS holds Girls in STEM workshop with Sikorsky reps

WHHS held a Girls in STEM Workshop this week with two Sikorsky employees, one of whom is a WHHS grad. Calleigh Esposito (the WHHS alum) and Patricia Snider told Westie girls about the types of STEM careers they can explore and what they would need to study in college, and shared why different people decide to have a career in engineering. They also gave an overview of the helicopters that Sikorsky produces.
