Bailey teachers win national contest for class lesson
  bailey ceremony

Bailey Middle School teachers Mr. DiGioia and Mrs. Mitchell won 30 Chromebook laptops and more than 400 books for their classrooms after winning 2nd place in a national contest for submitting an innovative and fun teaching lesson to the competition. The winning lesson that they created involved a book called "The Martian" and interdisciplinary activities with the story in Mr. DiGioia's English language arts classes and Mrs. Mitchell's science classes. The contest was sponsored by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. The two eighth-grade teachers surprised their students with the news today and with the laptops and books. And even though our students love technology, some of them couldn't put down the new books they saw, as they flipped through pages with friends or read summaries on the back covers. They all look forward to using the new laptops and books in class.

Admission for all others costs $5. Youngsters are encouraged to bring a pillow or blanket to sit upon. The musical story, adapted by the WHHS students, was inspired by various fairytales, including “The Three Little Pigs,” “Sleeping Beauty” and “Rapunzel.”

WHHS senior to attend & swim for SCSU next year

A West Haven High School senior who has broken school records in nearly every swim stroke has signed a letter of intent to attend and swim for Southern Connecticut State University next fall. Max Padro has received a scholarship to attend the college and plans to major in business. Though he will be completely new to the SCSU swim team, the transition should be easy: He’s been swimming at the SCSU pool for the past several years for the SoNoCo (Southern/Northern Connecticut) swim club under the guidance of Coach Tim Quill, who both the SoNoCo and SCSU head swimming coach. He's also been on the WHHS swim team since he was a freshman and became the first Westie last year to win a boys Class L swimming event in school history.
