VEX Robotics Club new to WHHS

West Haven High School has formed a new VEX Robotics Club to give students a chance to build robots and enter a competition next month. Club members are turning piles of gears, metal, rods and plastic into robots that will be able to pick up and throw balls at targets, zoom around the room, and even pick up another robot. The WHHS STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Department oversees the group. Students don’t have to be in a STEM class to participate and can be from any WHHS grade. Westies who want to join can see Mr. Barraco.

Forum takes on bullying, emotional intelligence
West Haven hosted a forum on student wellness and school climate yesterday at the Savin Rock Conference Center and received some help from someone you might recognize--Star Trek's Chase Masterson, who lived in West Haven as a kid. The “Inaugural Educational Leadership Series: School Climate and Public Policy” forum was coordinated by West Haven Board of Education member Pat Libero and State Rep. Charles Ferraro. Their goal was to facilitate an in-depth dialog with leaders of the state’s school districts, legislators, state education officials and others involved in shaping school policy about including social emotional learning programs in schools. Attendees from area school districts and colleges, as well as legislators and local officials, learned about how Masterson's Pop Culture Hero Coalition fights bullying and how a Yale program called RULER can help in schools.Click for a New Haven Register article on the event and a News 8 report.
