Schools celebrate holidays with service
District schools have been celebrating the holiday season all month long with community service to help local families in need, show gratitude to those in the military, bring a festive feeling to town, or bring cheer to kids in the hospital. Pictured above: A Washington Elementary School student helps decorate a tree on the city Green with homemade ornaments students made at school. Carrigan Intermediate School students load nearly 650 donated toys onto a school bus to bring to the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital Toy Closet, following a Student Council-led toy drive this month. West Haven High School Peer Advocates worked with local firefighters on their annual Toys for Joy drive, collecting hundreds of items and $2,000 in monetary donations to put toward even more toys for local families in need. Carrigan students, teacher win poetry contest
poetry winners
Carrigan Intermediate School students Coogan Cardella, Erica Stephens and Eveleen Jiang are winners of the Ora Mason Library's Poe-Tree Contest. The students are in Carrigan's Talented and Gifted program, which is taught by Patti Fusco. Fusco introduced the contest to her students this fall. Patrons of the library were encouraged to write short poems on leaves during the month of November. Eveleen and Coogan won first prize in the Tween/Teen division and Erica Stephens won second prize. Fusco also entered her own poem and won second prize in the Adult Division.
