News & Notes

December menus have been posted online.

• The city's annual tree-lighting celebration kicks off Saturday at 5 p.m. on the Green and will feature Bailey Middle School students and WHHS cheerleaders helping to light the tree.

• The West Haven Public School District is making progress in closing the achievement gap among groups of students and is a “standout district” in that area, according to local education advocacy group ConnCAN. To learn more about the district's progress, click here.

The public library is holding a holiday party Dec. 5 and pajama story time Dec. 15, and the Ward-Heitmann House is hosting holiday story time Dec. 12.

Bailey's National Junior Honor Society is hosting its annual food drive through December 16 for local food banks.

Schools celebrate Thanksgiving, help community
District schools have been celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday this month with food drives for the community, "trees of thanks," school traditions, and meals with classmates and family members. Pictured above are the winners of the annual Alma E. Pagels Elementary School Turkey Trot (with prizes of turkey and pies), a food collection at Seth G. Haley Elementary School, "A Cultural Thanksgiving" held by the WHHS certified nursing assistant classes, and a Savin Rock Community School tree of thanks with leaves representing different things students are grateful for in their lives.

Construction students help Habitat for Humanity
West Haven High School construction students volunteered at a Habitat for Humanity site in New Haven in November, working on sub-floors, concrete pads, weatherization, and more. Students were excited to get exposed to a wide range of skill application on an actual job site.

PTSA fundraising at Barnes & Noble Saturday

The WHHS PTSA is holding a fundraiser at Barnes and Noble in Milford this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., featuring student performances, face-painting, kids’ games and activities and more. Entertainment will also be provided by local families and residents, WHHS alumni, the Mulkerin Irish Dancers, and the Rock House School of Music. A portion of sales made during the event will benefit the WHHS PTSA. Can't come? Winkle Bus makes donation in honor of BOE
Superintendent of Schools Neil C. Cavallaro and Board of Education Chairwoman Patricia Libero announced at a November meeting that Winkle Bus Co. has made a $300 donation to the David Cappetta Scholarship Fund in honor of outgoing Board of Education members (from left to right) Patrick Egolum, Betsy David and Cebi Waterfield. The scholarship fund benefits a West Haven student each year. Cappetta served as the finance director for the West Haven Board of Education before passing away in 2014.
