In hopes of boosting school resources and students’ exposure to technology, the Rotary Club of West Haven is putting proceeds from its major spring fundraiser toward Nook tablets for every fourth-grade classroom in the city.

The Rotary Club of West Haven 26th Annual Auction, planned for May 17 at the Westwoods Ballroom, is funding the purchase of the digital devices because they are used for reading electronic versions of books and because literacy has been a primary focus of the Rotary Club this year. Members have also been collecting books for elementary schools and tutoring students at Edith E. Mackrille Elementary School over the past several months.

“This effort is bringing in technology and making it not only academic, but also fun, and there are so many options with Nooks. The goal is to raise enough money for three nooks for every fourth-grade classroom,” said Rotary Club of West Haven President Elect Kathy Wielk. “Teachers recommended that we donate them to the fourth grade. The suggestion came from within the schools, which was good because we can respond to a need.”

The Rotary Club is planning to donate the gadgets to all six elementary schools in the West Haven School District. Currently, a handful of tablets are spread throughout classrooms, and schools hope to use the Nooks to engage students in reading in a new and different way.

Funds raised at the auction will go toward the Rotary Club’s other projects as well, including its donation of dictionaries to every third-grader in the city each year, leadership training for students, the Student of the Month program, scholarships, Career Shadowing Day, and the Scholar Athletes Luncheon, said President Jason Crockett, who has tutored students this year at Mackrille.

Tickets are $50 per person and include a family-style gourmet dinner and an open bar. The night includes both silent and live auctions. To purchase tickets, contact Wielk at 203-494-1052 or or any West Haven Rotarian. Tickets will also be available at the door.
