The school district held Dinner and a Book Family Literacy Evenings for its six elementary schools in March at the West Haven Public Library, inviting families to learn how to help kids become better readers.

School reading consultants, a language arts coach and librarians held three sessions for each elementary school and discussed various literacy skills and reading techniques, how to engage children in conversation about books, and how to choose a "just right book" for a child.

All sessions provided dinner, and families who attended all three of their school's sessions were entered into a raffle for a Kindle Fire.

The Kindle Fire winners are: Paula Darden, a parent from Forest Elementary School; Misha Dowdye, a parent from Edith E. Mackrille Elementary School (below with Kathy Giotsas, director of the West Haven Public Library); and Jenny Velaso, a parent from Savin Rock Community School (also pictured with Giotsas).
