Fifth-grader wins district-wide spelling bee

This is the image for the news article titled Fifth-grader wins district-wide spelling bee The school district's 36th annual City-wide Championship Spelling Bee was held at City Hall Feb. 20. Four students competed, having won spelling bees for their grades (grades 5, 6, 7 and 8).

Hayat Khan, a fifth-grader at Carrigan Intermediate School, won the competition and will advance to the Regional Spelling Bee on March 18 at Southern Connecticut State University.

The other participants were Brendan Carew, grade 6, Carrigan Intermediate School; Courtney Skeens, grade 7, Bailey Middle School; and James McCarthy, grade 8, Bailey Middle School.

The alternates were Zyasia Walton, grade 5, Carrigan Intermediate School; Elizabeth Hall, grade 6, Carrigan Intermediate School; Christopher Bradley, grade 7, Bailey Middle School; and Alfred Hansen, grade 8, Bailey Middle School.
