WEST HAVEN, Mary 5, 2015 — The Bailey Middle School Drama Club is set to perform “Cinderella and the Substitute Fairy Godmother” May 8 and 9 in the Bailey auditorium. And while the show stars a beloved and classic fairytale character, it puts a big twist on the traditional story.

It’s got cameos of your other favorite storybook villains and heroes—including Pinocchio, the Big Bad Wolf, the Three Little Pigs and Rumpelstiltskin—and an evil step-brother along with Cinderella’s evil step-sister. Plus, it’s a comedy.

“When I was looking for ideas for what show we could do this spring, I thought about the students we have in the club and how we have a lot of funny kids who don’t always get the chance to show that side of themselves,” said Bailey teacher and play Director Caitlin Pinto. “This is a funny version of Cinderella with parts of all different fairytales.”

The play is about what happens when Cinderella’s regular fairy godmother is sick with food poisoning. It’s about 1 hour and 15 minutes long. The 65 drama club members, who are either student-actors or on the crew, began rehearsing in March and have been enjoying the chance to put their own spin on each character, Pinto added.

“The love it and think it’s hilarious. They have a lot of creative freedom with the characters,” Pinto said. “These are characters people know, but in a different light.”

Bailey music teachers Rachel Mekeel and Samantha Ross and social studies teacher Francine Lucibello are assisting, while art teachers Kathryn Shea and Jennifer Lucibelli helped create the set.

Shows are at 7 p.m. both nights, and tickets are available for purchase in advance or at the door for $8 for adults and $5 for students. Bailey students are free if they have their school ID and are with an adult. The Bailey PTSA will also be selling refreshments.
