WEST HAVEN, April 14, 2015 — West Haven students and their families are invited to a special open house event at the Edward L. Bennett Ice Rink that celebrates the city’s storied hockey history and highlights opportunities awaiting them on local and high school teams and in skating lessons.

The Great Skate open house is Tuesday, April 21, and Friday, April 24, from 6-8 p.m. at Bennett Rink (click here for the Bennett Rink webpage) on the West Haven High School campus, 1 McDonough Plaza. All skating and hockey lessons and equipment rentals will be free during the event, which is drop-in style and features lessons and activities throughout the evening. A limited number of children’s helmets will be available for free rental, but families are asked to bring their own if possible.

Members of the WHHS boys and girls hockey teams will be on hand for meet and greets, while local youth hockey leagues will have information available on sign-ups. There will also be free raffles, and the WHHS Blue Devil will be posing for pictures.

The program is intended to promote an interest in hockey and skating and to give local families from West Haven Public Schools, St. Lawrence School and Our Lady of Victory School a night of fun and free activities.  Families may come for one or both of the nights.

“We’re really lucky to have an ice rink right on our high school property, and we want to show younger students what we have to offer there when they get to West Haven High School. We have a great hockey program, and we’re thankful that West Haven residents have always cheered us on. We want to keep developing it and making it better,” said Joe Morrell, who is heading up the Great Skate and coaches the WHHS boys hockey team, as well as the girls softball team.

“Getting more kids interested in hockey and skating when they’re young will help us to do that.”

As a prelude to the evening event, West Haven Public School second-graders will have a one-hour “class at the rink” session during the school day on April 22. Students will learn more about the sport, not only from the athletic team perspective but also as a form of physical fitness, and see skating and hockey demonstrations from older students.

While the rink is home to the WHHS boys and girls hockey teams and local youth leagues, as well as other area schools’ teams, it also accommodates WHHS gym class free-style skating, Learn to Skate lessons, public skating sessions, and street hockey summer camps.
