WEST HAVEN, Feb. 10, 2015 — The West Haven Public School District is beginning the process of kindergarten registration for the 2015-16 school year and encourages parents to call now to book a time slot for a kindergarten registration appointment.

Kindergarten registration appointments will be held at the Savin Rock Conference Center, 6 Rock St., from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on March 23 and 25, and from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. March 24 and March 26. Parents should call 203-937-4300, extension 7130, as soon as possible to schedule an appointment.

Spanish-speaking families may call Ada Diaz at 203-479-1495. Additionally, translators for multiple languages will be available at the conference center during kindergarten registration week to assist families.

After booking a registration appointment, parents will need to fill out an online registration form. The form will be available on the homepage of whschools.org starting March 1 and should be completed by families before their registration appointment. Families should also print out a copy of the finished form and bring that to the appointment.

Any families who need help in completing the form or do not have a printer should arrive at the conference center a half-hour before their scheduled kindergarten registration appointment; computers and assistance will be available. Computers are also available at the public library.

When attending the appointment, families should ensure they bring a copy of their child’s most recent physical and immunization records, if available; two proofs of residency, such as a copy of a lease, mortgage statement, and most recent utility, phone or cable bill; and their child’s birth certificate.

A child can still be registered even if his or her physical examination has not yet been completed. However, the exam will need to be done before school starts in the fall, or the student will not be allowed to begin classes.

Registration appointments will include a skills assessment and hearing and vision screenings for the future kindergarteners. As they were last year, representatives from the Community House and Family Resource Center will also be at the conference center to speak with parents about their services and other community resources.

Children who are being registered must turn 5 on or before January 1, 2016, and must attend the registration appointment. Each registered youngster will receive a free backpack of items to assist in preparing them for school, such as flashcards and a book, while parents will receive information on what they can help their child work on over the summer to reinforce skills that will be needed in kindergarten.

Children who will be attending magnet schools must still register with the West Haven School District.
