WEST HAVEN, June 9, 2014 — The Board of Education approved a contract at its June 2 meeting to promote Matthew Cavallaro to the position of business manager for the school district.

Cavallaro, who has a degree in business management from Assumption College in Massachusetts, had been serving for the past five years as the district’s internal grants auditor under former business manager David Cappetta, who died May 9. Cappetta worked for the district for six years.

“I’m happy I was offered the opportunity to take over as business manager, but of course wish it was under different circumstances,” Cavallaro said. “David was a great teacher and mentor, and I’m confident in my ability to make a positive impact in this job. I’m looking forward to working even more closely on the budget and to continuing the relationship we’ve built with the city’s finance office.”

Superintendent of Schools Neil C. Cavallaro (who is not related to Matthew Cavallaro) said he was a natural choice for the job, given his extensive experience with school district finances and grants and his deep understanding of the budget.

“Matt has proven himself to be a conscientious and valuable member of our team and is moving forward with the good work that David was doing,” the superintendent said. “He’ll have a lot on his plate as he closes out the budget for this fiscal year, but I know he’s more than prepared for the job.”
