WEST HAVEN, April 11, 2016 — West Haven students and their families are invited to a free ice skating event at the Edward L. Bennett Ice Rink Friday for a turn on the ice and some fun with local hockey teams.

The Great Skate open house is Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Bennett Rink on the West Haven High School campus, 1 McDonough Plaza. All skating lessons and equipment rentals will be free during the event, which is drop-in style and features skating lessons and activities throughout the evening. A limited number of children’s helmets will be available for free rental, but families are asked to bring their own if possible.

The event aims to celebrate the city’s passion for hockey and highlight opportunities awaiting West Haven youngsters on local and high school teams and in skating lessons.

Members of the WHHS boys and girls hockey team will be on hand for meet and greets, while local youth hockey leagues will have information on sign-ups available. There will also be free raffles, and the WHHS Blue Devil will be posing for pictures.

The first Great Skate evening was held last spring, and a “Midnight Madness” hockey night featuring a free public skate and WHHS hockey scrimmage took place this past December to kick off the winter sports season.

“Our free family skating nights at Bennett Rink have been a tremendous success, and we’re glad that an enthusiasm for hockey and skating is spreading to younger generations in town. Hockey is a huge part of West Haven history, so we want to continue to promote it and use it as a way to bring families in our community together, while also showing kids what they have to look forward to when they come to WHHS,” said Joe Morrell, who heads up the Great Skate and is a multi-sport WHHS coach. “Our hockey program keeps growing and improving, and we’re glad West Haven residents and students keep cheering us on.”

As a prelude to the evening event, West Haven Public School second-graders will have a one-hour “class at the rink” session during school Friday. Students will learn more about the sport, not only from the athletic team perspective but also as a form of physical fitness, and see demonstrations from older students.

While the rink is home to the WHHS boys and girls hockey teams and local youth leagues, as well as other area schools’ teams, it also accommodates WHHS gym class free-style skating, Learn to Skate lessons, public skating sessions, and field hockey summer camps.
