Open Enrollment for Health Insurance

May and June are the months for “Open Enrollment” for health insurance.

Open Enrollment means that this is the only time you can make changes (add dependents, waive coverage, etc.) to your Medical/Drug and Dental insurance unless you have a qualifying change in family status during the year (i.e. marriage, add/loss of dependent, death, divorce, loss of job). These changes will be effective July 1, 2011.

If you marry, you have thirty (30) days to add your spouse. If you do not do so within the thirty (30) days, you will have to wait until the following Open Enrollment period (May and June of every year). Anthem requires a copy of your marriage certificate.

If you give birth or adopt a child, the baby/child is covered automatically for the first thirty (30) days. You must call or email me with your child’s name, birth date, and Social Security number within that first thirty (30) days. I realize that you may not have your child’s Social Security number right away, but please call me within 30 days to advise me of the birth/adoption, and then call back when you receive their Social Security number.

If you elect to take a Waiver instead of insurance, you cannot enroll in health coverage in the middle of the year. You will have to wait until the next Open Enrollment for coverage. The only exception will be, as aforementioned, qualifying change in family status.
